This is a potent 10 to 1 powdered extract, meaning that 1 gram of extract is equal in potency to 10 grams of whole herb. This is an organic extract, in which the herb is dissolved in edible grain alcohol, and then the alcohol completely evaporated, leaving nothing but a potent powdered herb concentrate.
This little known herb has a long history of shamanic uses. It can be smoked or drank as a tea to induce vivid and intense dream states.
Calea zacatechichi leaves and flowers are traditionally infused in water and the resulting tea is imbibed slowly, after which the shaman lies down in a quiet place and smokes a cigarette of the dried leaves of the same plant. The powdered extract can be used the same way.
According to MacDougall, 'sufficiency of dose taken is said to be indicated by a sense of repose, when the person 'hears his own heart and pulse beats.' Amongst the Chontal medicine-men, Calea Zacatechichi is called 'leaf of god,' and is valued 'for the clarification of the senses,' 'visions seen in dreams,' and as a 'secret plant' to induce visions.
Calea Zacatechichi is a well known folk medicine in Mexico, utilized especially for use in treating intermittent fevers. Alkaloids have not been found in the plant. Its medicinal reputation seems to be attributable mainly to a bitter principle, the precise nature of which has not yet been determined, and an aromatic constituent. 'Further ethnobotanical studies of this interesting plant are indicated, and more thorough chemical investigations, using modern techniques, may uncover an hallucinogenic principle.' (U.N. Bulletin on Narcotics 1970 issue 1)
