Bugleweed is a sedative cough reliever. It is especially helpful with coughs of nervous origin, that is, with nervous symptoms of over-active thyroid glands. Such disturbances can include nervous cough, shaking, shortness of breath and palpitation.

The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Bugleweed for 'Mild thyroid hyperfunction with disturbances of the vegetative nervous system. Tension and pain in the breast (mastodynia).'

'Contraindications: Thyroid hypofunction, enlargement of the thyroid without functional disorders.'

'Side Effects: In rare cases, extended therapy and high dosages of bugleweed preparations have resulted in an enlargement of the thyroid. Sudden discontinuation of bugleweed preparations can cause increased symptoms of the disease complex.'

'The dosage lies between a daily dosage of 1 - 2 g of drug for teas and water-ethanol extracts equivalent of 20 mg of drug. Note: Each patient has his own individual optimal level of thyroid hormone. Only rough estimations of dosage are possible for thyroid disorders, in which age and weight must be considered.'

'Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb, freshly pressed juice and other galenical preparations for internal use. Actions: Antigonadotropic; Antithyrotropic; Inhibition of the peripheral deiodination of T4; Lowering of the prolactin level.'

Grieve classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Sedative, astringent and mildly narcotic. Used in coughs, bleeding from the lungs and consumption.'

'The infusion made from 1 oz. of the dried herb to 1 pint of boiling water is taken in wineglassful doses, frequently, the fluid extract in doses of 10 to 30 drops, and the dry extract, Lycopin, in doses of 1 to 4 grains.'

King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Lycopus fills an important place in Eclectic therapeutics. Its action is chiefly exhibited on the vascular structures and the sympathetic nervous system. It is a certain sedative, mild narcotic, subastringent, and tonic. Its sedative action is most pronounced and most frequently indicated where the vascular action is tumultuous, the velocity of the pulse rapid, with evident want of cardiac power. It is for this purpose that it is principally employed in advanced stages of acute disease with great debility, and in chronic disease with frequent pulse. It improves the circulation, and its good influence is extended to all the parts under the control of the vegetative system of nerves.'

'As a sedative, Prof. Scudder classes it with aconite and veratrum. It acts somewhat like digitalis in reducing the velocity of the pulse, but is devoid of the dangerous effects resulting from the use of that drug, and hence has proved useful in some cardiac affections. It controls excessive vascular excitement, general irritability, and diminishes exalted organic action. Upon the stomach its action is kindly, improving the appetite, and serving as a mild gastric tonic. Normal secretion is established by it, and blood-making and nutrition are improved.'

'Lycopus is a remedy for morbid vigilance and insomnia attendant upon either acute or chronic disease. As a remedy for painful and distressing forms of indigestion, the specific lycopus will be found advantageous as well as a mild tonic in general debility. In the past it has been employed to purify the blood of patients suffering from old ulcers, an infusion being employed locally at the same time.'

'Its therapy in gastro-intestinal affections is worthy of notice. We have already noticed its use in indigestion. In dysentery and diarrhoea it may be given with advantage to the patient. It is of special value in the diarrhoea of phthisis, and is equally valuable to allay irritation and inflammation in gastritis and enteritis. especially those acute gastric disturbances and inflammatory diseases common to the drunkard. Bugleweed has been used both for its sedative effects and for its influence on the gastro-intestinal troubles accompanying intermittent fevers.'

'Bugleweed is of great value in acute pulmonary complaints, and of still greater utility in chronic lung troubles. It acts as a gentle sedative and tonic. It reduces the frequency and force of the heart's action, and is indicated in pulmonary lesions with irritation and cough, and with tendency to hemorrhage.'

'In consumption it is a splendid remedy to relieve the distressing symptoms, and may be administered in drop doses every hour. It is valuable in acute as well as chronic pneumonia. In ordinary acute catarrh it may be administered with aconite, eupatorium, and other indicated agents. It is indicated by chronic cough, mucous or muco-purulent expectoration, frequent pulse, high temperature, tubercular deposits, and albuminuria, with vascular excitement' (Felter).

'For pulmonary hemorrhage, lycopus combined with cinnamon and ipecac, is the best remedy with which we are acquainted. Dose of the powder, from 1 to 2 drachms; of the infusion, from 2 drachms to 4 fluid ounces; of a strong tincture of the recent plant, from 5 to 60 minims; of specific lycopus, 1 to 30 minims.'

American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'It possesses tonic, sedative, astringent and narcotic properties, and has been successfully used in incipient phthisis, hemoptysis, etc. It acts like digitalis in reducing the velocity of the pulse, but has no cumulative effects. In pericarditis and endocarditis its sedative action lessens the frequency of the pulse, irritability, and its attendant inflammation, in a manner equaled by no other remedy.'

'Cases of exopthalmic goitre are reported as having been cured by lycopus, and it would be well to give it a thorough trial in this most intractable disease.'

'In diseases of the respiratory apparatus lycopus has been found to be very useful. Hemoptysis, associated with rapid and tumultuous heart's action, yields readily to its influence, as does hemorrhage from any part. Hale lauds lycopus highly for its efficiency when used in cases of incipient phthisis and in chronic inflammatory diseases of the lungs. By regulating the heart's action and equalizing the circulation in the lungs it mitigates or arrests the local inflammation.'

'Chronic irritable cough, arising from the smouldering inflammation in the lungs, can be cured by its administration. It has been used repeatedly in the high temperature of typhoid fever with uniformly good results; it not only effectually reduced the excessive heat, but in so doing, it did not depress in the least the vital forces of the patient.'
