Marshmallow Root C/S Cert. Organic (Althea officinalis) 1 lb: C
Starwest Botanicals Marshmallow Root C/S Cert. Organic (Althea officinalis) 1 lb: C

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack.

Marshmallow root is, of course, the basic ingredient in innumerable confection recipes. Want real old-time sweet treats? Start here.

Marshmallows Treats:

http://www.hungrybrowser.com/phaedrus/m010702.htm:

2 egg whites
1 tsp vanilla
½ cup raw cane sugar
1 tbsp powdered Marshmallow (root)

Whip egg whites until almost stiff. Add vanilla and whip until stiff.
Then whip in the sugar, 1 tsp at the time. Finally, add Marshmallow and
whip again. Place by teaspoonfull on cookie sheet. Bake in 325 oven
for 1 hour.

Marshmallow Cough Syrup:

http://www.cyber-kitchen.com/ubbs/archive/HOME_REMEDIES/Cough_and_Cold_Remedies.html:

2 cups water
2 cups sugar
¼ cup orange juice or juice of 1 lemon
1½ to 2 ½ tsp chopped dried marshmallow root

In a small saucepan, bring marshmallow root and water to a boil.

Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.

Strain liquid into another saucepan (should result in about 1 cup).

Over a low heat, slowly stir in sugar until it becomes thick and granules completely dissolve.

(Stir in more water if the mixture becomes too thick.)

Remove from heat and stir in orange juice.

Transfer to a container and allow to cool before covering tightly.

Marshmallow Root & Lanolin Soap:

http://www.ziggurat.org/soap/recipes/basic-soap.shtml:

From Kim of Oakleaf Valley Naturals
Ingredients:
22 oz tallow
8 oz olive oil
4 oz castor oil
12 oz shortening
1 oz stearic acid
18 oz water (infused with marshmallow root)
6.3 oz lye

Add at trace:
2 oz lanolin
I scented this with Anise. Once the lanolin saponifies, I've never smelled it in soap.

To infuse marshmallow root:
In a saucepan, take about a cup of marshmallow root pieces (chopped as finely as possible) and cover them with water (try to get as close to the final amount as possible...for this recipe I started with 24 oz so I knew I'd have enough. Anything left over makes a wonderful lotion) You'll end up with a thick, almost jelly-like substance that is wonderfully moisturizing for your skin. Use this for your water in the soap recipe (I left a few small pieces in the soap; it didn't leave the soap scratchy at all).

Marshmallow Root is also serious old-time medicine. Marshmallow root and extract were formerly official in the United States Pharmacopeia and the National Formulary. In the U.S. today, marshmallow is used as a component of dietary supplement antitussive and demulcent preparations. The root is also used as a component of a few prepared cough tea and cough syrup medicines.

In Germany, marshmallow root and leaf are both licensed as standard medicinal teas.

The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Marshmallow root for '(a) Irritation of the oral and pharyngeal mucosa and associated dry cough. (b) Mild inflammation of the gastric mucosa.'

'Daily dosage: 6 g of root; equivalent preparations. Marshmallow syrup: Single dose: 10 g. Mode of Administration: Cut or ground root for aqueous extracts as well as other galenical preparations for internal use. Marshmallow syrup to be used only for use (a).'

'Actions: Alleviates local irritation; Inhibits mucociliary activity; Stimulates phagocytosis'

The contemporary British Herbal Compendium indicates its use internally for gastroenteritis, peptic and duodenal ulceration, common and ulcerative colitis, and enteritis.

Topically as a mouthwash or gargle for inflammation of the mouth and pharynx; as a poultice or ointment/cream in furunculosis, eczema and dermatitis.

Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The great demulcent and emollient properties of Marsh Mallow make it useful in inflammation and irritation of the alimentary canal, and of the urinary and respiratory organs. The dry roots boiled in water give out half their weight of a gummy matter like starch.'

'Decoctions of the plant, especially of the root, are very useful where the natural mucus has been abraded from the coats of the intestines. Boiled in wine or milk, Marsh Mallow will relieve diseases of the chest, constituting a popular remedy for coughs, bronchitis, whooping-cough, etc., generally in combination with other remedies.'

'It is frequently given in the form of a syrup, which is best adapted to infants and children. It is excellent in painful complaints of the urinary organs, exerting a relaxing effect upon the passages, as well as acting curatively.'

King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'The root of this plant .... will be found valuable, in the form of decoction, in diseases of the mucous tissues, as hoarseness, catarrh, pneumonia, gonorrhoea, vesical catarrh, renal irritation, acute dysentery, and diarrhoea. In strangury, inflammation of the bladder, hematuria, retention of urine, some forms of gravel, and indeed in nearly every affection of the kidney and bladder, their use will be found advantageous.'

'Much use is made of them combined with equal parts of spearmint, in urinary derangements. They are likewise efficacious in gastro-intestinal irritation and inflammation. As the decoction soon decomposes, or becomes moldy or acid, it should always be made in small quantities, not more than 1 or 2 pints at a time, according to the temperature of the weather.'

'Externally, marshmallow root is very useful in the form of poultice, to discuss painful, inflammatory tumors, and swellings of every kind, whether the consequence of wounds, bruises, burns, scalds, or poisons; and has, when thus applied, had a happy effect in preventing the occurrence of gangrene. The infusion or decoction may be freely administered.'

American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'In its soothing influence upon the intestinal structures, it is of service when there is inflammation of the bowels or irritation from any cause, and it is often administered as an enema in dysentery, and if a few drops of laudanum be added it will often cause prompt relief from the tenesmus and general distress.'

'When irritation of the bladder exists from decomposed urine, this agent is of much service, especially if taken in conjunction with benzoic acid or benzoate of sodium. An infusion which contains five or six grains of the above salts to the ounce is of most excellent service in these cases. Acute painful cystitis with much mucus, ammoniacal urine, great pain in urinating, and tenesmus, should be relieved in twelve hours with this method.'

'In conditions where simple irritation is induced either from the presence of uric acid or other precipitated crystalline bodies, a strong infusion of Althaea will greatly enhance the influence of other indicated remedies.'

British Pharmaceutical Codex, 1911: 'Althaea is demulcent and emollient. Taken internally it is a popular remedy for catarrhs and bronchitis. It may be given in the form of syrup, lozenges, or decoction. Guimauve pastilles, which contain althaea, flavoured with neroli oil, are a useful and pleasant demulcent.'

'The powdered root is useful as an excipient for pills which require some inert absorbent substance.'

'Althaea has been applied to inflamed tissues as a fomentation (1 part of powdered root to 5 parts of water), the macerated drug being used as a poultice; and has been recommended as an ointment in a variety of skin diseases. Marshmallow ointment, properly so called, was prepared by heating marshmallow leaves with an equal weight of lard and straining, the product being employed for its soothing and emollient effects...'
