The chemical-free processing method used by ECOLUTION® gently coaxes out the beautiful and rich natural essence of hemp fiber. This is accomplished with a series of increasingly fine mechanical combings done in two stages known as scutching and hackling, the traditional methods used for hemp processing in Eastern Europe.
Our natural, chemical-free hemp fabric is healthy for the skin; this is particularly important for people with allergies and chemical sensitivities. Our environmentally-sound processing preserves the innate integrity of hemp fiber with its long molecular structure and inherent strength and durability.

Chemical processing, which pulps the fiber with heavy caustic sodas and acid rinses, strips the fiber of much of its rich character and strength and produces hazardous, environmentally-destructive waste. In the spring of 1999, we developed significantly finer 100% hemp yarns without sacrificing our all-natural, chemical-free method of mechanical fiber separation and preparation. This was accomplished by refining the hackling stage of our combing technology and the banding stage of our fiber preparation.
These finer yarns allow us to weave and knit wonderfully light and soft 100% hemp fabrics, which are so much more durable than fabrics produced from hemp/cotton or chemically processed short-fiber hemp yarns. The rich texture of our textiles is enhanced with air finishing, a new environmentally-sound finishing technology that uses strong blasts of compressed air to soften the fabric. This softening brings out the inherent beauty and uniquely rich character of natural, long-fiber hemp. Hemp is an exceptionally comfortable and healthy fabric to wear, since it's hypoallergenic and nonirritating to the skin.
Hemp has excellent insulative and conductive qualities. When compared to cotton, for example, hemp is warmer yet breathes better. For hot weather, hemp has superior conductive qualities to those of all other textile fibers (equaled only by flax), allowing the wearer to feel cool, comfortable, and fresh in very hot and/or humid conditions. Aditionally, the shaft-like structure of the hemp fiber molecule allows it to wick moisture right off the body, dry quickly, and, in cold conditions, even feel warm when wet.
Hemp fabric is very resistant to degradation from mold, bacteria, salt water, sunlight, abrasion, and chemicals, while being fully biodegradable (unlike synthetic fibers).
ECOLUTION® colors are environmentally sound; natural dyes are made from plants and all other colors from fiber-reactive dyes.
We make all of our linings, edgings, straps, pockets, compartments, and all other such trimmings from hemp.
This spring ECOLUTION® launched a stunning selection of shell buttons that reflect our practice of producing unique and beautiful natural fashions. These buttons have been specifically chosen to match each color and style of our apparel. They are made from Acoya, Awabi, Doboo, Mussel, Paua, Shell Conch, and T-Wing shells.
In addition to these shells, we still work with our classic tagua nut buttons for some of our garments. The tagua nuts are collected by indigenous peoples from the Amazon.
