1-Octacosanol (also known as n-octacosanol, octacosyl alcohol, cluytyl alcohol, montanyl alcohol) is a carbon primary fatty alcohol that is common in the epicuticular waxes of plants, including the leaves of many species of Eucalyptus, of most forage and cereal grasses, of Acacia, Trifolium, Pisum and many other legume genera among many others, sometimes as the major wax constituent. Octacosanol also occurs in wheat germ. Octacosanol is insoluble in water but freely soluble in low molecular-weight alkanes and in chloroform (CHCl3). Octacosanol is being investigated as a herpes antiviral and as a treatment for inflammatory diseases of the skin. It may be helpful with Parkinson disease and ALS, but more studies are needed. Octacosanol administration also has conferred enhanced physical endurance in some studies. Octacosanol (policosanol) has been studied at doses from 10 to 20 mg daily in cholesterol reduction and heart disease. Studies indicate that this compound is useful in improving endurance and increasing oxygen utilization. Limited studies suggest that Octacosanol works to reduce blood cholesterol, and helps patients with Parkinson's Disease. Long-term trials in humans using amounts up to 20 mg per day have not shown any negative effects.

A standardized herbal extract is an herb extract that has one or more components present in a specific, guaranteed amount, usually expressed as a percentage. The intention behind the standardization of herbs is to guarantee that the consumer is getting a product in which the chemistry is consistent from batch to batch. Standardized extracts are usually in a base of the whole herb powder.

In most cases, ratio 4:1, 5:1, 10:1 herbal extracts are not as potent as standardized % herbal extracts, although, since concentrated, ratio extracts are usually more potent than whole herb.

10:1 is more powerful than 4:1, and 4:1 is more powerful than straight herb powder. More powerful means that you take less. The rule in herbalism is to start with a small experimental dose. Upon determining that you have had no negative reaction, you can increase the dose.
